He was President of the Boys Nation and graduated from Princeton University, where he was a member of the Princeton College Republicans.

He worked for the presidential campaign of George H.W. Bush in 1988.

He married a woman named Sybil in 2013.

He ran against and lost to incumbent Republican Senator from Kansas Pat Roberts in 2014.
