He starred at Notre Dame High School in Illinois and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

He won a World Series Championship in 1980 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

His son Ryan was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1992.

He teamed with Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt to form a powerful hitting tandem for the Philadelphia Phillies.
