Played Maya Wilkes on the long running TV series Girlfriends alongside actor Tracee Ellis Ross. She received additional fame for her starring role in the film Beauty Shop .  In 2018, she began starring in the TV limited series called I Am the Night .

She attended UC Berkeley and Sarah Lawrence College .

She appeared on the TV series Hart of Dixie alongside Rachel Bilson .

She had a daughter named Dakota Tao Brooks-Woodside in 2009 with her former boyfriend DB Woodside .

She was in the film Beauty Shop alongside Queen Latifah .
