He won two state championships while playing for Florida's Hialeah High School.

He was named to his first MLB All-Star game during his third season with the Oakland Athletics in 2011.

He and his siblings were raised in Florida.

He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jim Thome in 2005.
