An Estonian-born German author, he taught at the University of Sydney and published a popular literary encyclopedia.
He studied at the University of Heidelberg from 1953 until 1957.
His most famous work is his Lexicon of World Literature.
His family was forced to leave Estonia in 1939 after the Soviet takeover of the country.
He was a contemporary of American writer Norman Mailer .
