He started coaching while playing for the Crackers, which was the Atlanta Braves' farm team in the Double-A division.
Despite his accomplishments with the Los Angeles Angels, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Montreal Expos, and Minnesota Twins, he was known for his teams' late-season improbable collapses.
He had one daughter with his wife Jodie.
He coached the Angels in the infamous "Donnie Moore" game that Joe Torre called on television.
