Known as the Tacoma Assassin, he was a world middleweight champion from 1936-1938 and also an accomplished actor.

He was trained by Jack Connor, Johnny Babnick, and Ray Arcel.

During his career he amassed a record of 125-5-11, with 60 victories coming by way of knockout.

He was married to Helen Steele.

He notably appeared in the Preston Sturges film "Hail the Conquering Hero."
