She began practicing martial arts when she was 18, beginning with kickboxing.

In addition to MMA, she has also had a successful career as a professional boxer.

She married grappling coach Neil Melanson in 2009, but the couple got divorced a few years later.

She went undefeated in her first nine professional boxing matches, before losing to Laila Ali .
