ABOUT EMMA LUCY BRAUN
Pioneering botanist and ecologist remembered for her expertise on the forests of the eastern region of the United States. She published more than 180 articles on the subject as well as seminal books like 1950's Deciduous Forests of Eastern North America.
She earned a PhD from the University of Cincinnati and later taught Ecology at the school.
She broke down many gender barriers of her time, becoming the first woman to serve as the President of the Ecological Society of America.
She never married and had no children. Her sister Annette was the first woman ever to earn a PhD from the University of Cincinnati.
She and Bonnie Templeton are two of America's most famous female botanists.
