Czech Olympic long-distance runner who won four gold medals and one silver medal. He competed in the marathon, 10000 meter, and 5000 meter races.
He was working in a shoe factory at the age of sixteen.
He earned the nickname the Czech Locomotive.
He married javelin thrower Dana Zátopková.
He created a training program based off Paavo Nurmi 's training techniques.
