Motown soul singer who released the #1 1970s hit "War" and the #6 hit "Twenty-Five Miles."
He started a doo-wop group called The Future Tones, releasing several minor hits on the small RicTic label.
His nickname was suggested by the managers of one of his groups, reportedly after hearing him sing and the manager telling him he would be a star one day.
He was born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee and was raised with his cousins in Cleveland, Ohio.
Norman Whitfield produced many of Starr's hits, including "War."
