American investigative journalist and author who won two Pulitzer Prizes over the course of his lengthy career.

After attending Pennsylvania State University, he served three years as a Special Agent with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps.

With his partner James B. Steele , he won two Pulitzer Prizes, two National Magazine Awards and six George Polk Awards.

He had a son with his wife Nancy.

He once wrote wrote a piece about aviator and noted recluse Howard Hughes .
