American golfer who won 10 PGA Tour events including the PGA Championship in 1957.
He played golf for North Texas State University, helping the team to four consecutive NCAA titles from 1949 to 1952.
Not one to give up easily, he waited seven minutes for the ball on the edge of a cup to drop at the 1963 Phoenix Open, leading to a rule change by the PGA.
He married his wife Pat in 1953. They had three children together.
He won the 1966 Philadelphia Golf Classic with a one-stroke margin over Jack Nicklaus .
