Journalist for NBC News who was gunned down after leaving the Jim Jones-led cult commune Jonestown in November 1978. He was a four-time Emmy winner and a recipient of the prestigious DuPont/Columbia Award.
He got his start in television news as a weatherman in North Carolina.
During his brief stay in Jonestown, he was slipped a note begging him to help cult members escape from the commune.
His son, Jeffrey, became a reporter at KXLY-TV in Washington.
He and Congressman Leo Ryan were both murdered during the Jonestown tragedy of 1978.
