He learned to speak French and English as a teen.

He began working for the New York Times as a photojournalist after escaping to Thailand in 1979.

He was in a relationship with Sydney Schanberg at the time of his death.

He was portrayed by Haing Ngor in the Academy Award-winning film The Killing Fields.
