During his time at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, he won an Atlantic Monthly fiction contest. Following his college graduation, he secured a position as a high school English teacher.
He earned a spot as one of the highest paid authors in the world, averaging $25 million per year.
He settled in Orange County, California (the setting of many of his novels) with his wife, Gerda Ann Cerra. Cerra supported him financially for five years before his works of horror fiction began to sell.
His work, Odd Thomas, was adapted into a 2013 film starring Anton Yelchin .
