He was drafted 29th overall in 1974 by the Buffalo Sabres.
He had his number 18 jersey retired by the Buffalo Sabres on November 22, 2005.
His father Ernie Gare was also a hockey player who played in the WIHL.
He played in the 1981 NHL All-Star game with legend Gordie Howe .
