In his youth career, he played for Newtown United, Blyth Town, and Blyth Spartans before being recruited by Darlington in 2009.

He grew up supporting Newcastle United. He played with Wigan Athletic from 2016 until 2018.

He was born in Blyth, England. He is married to Roz, a native of Cramlington, with whom he has two children.

He and Papiss Cisse have both played with Newcastle United.
