Big House Gaines coached basketball for 47 years at Winston-Salem State.
He graduated as his high school class salutorian, while earning All-State honors in football.
He led Winston-Salem State to a historic NCAA title in 1967.
He was married to Clara Berry for 55 years.
Bob Knight is one of the few college coaches with more career wins than him.
