He played high school ball at an inner-city school in Los Angeles before being drafted by the Oakland Athletics.
He was named the starting center fielder for the American League All-Star team in 1984.
His son Marcus was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2006.
He starred alongside All-Star outfielder Kirk Gibson on the Detroit Tigers.
