ABOUT CHARLIE ENGLE

Ultramarathon runner who entered his first race in 1996, originally thinking it was just a 10K run.

He was a drug addict and a dropout from the University of North Carolina, before becoming a serious runner.

He participated in an Eco-Challenge, and his self-filmed footage was so good that it earned him a job on the film crew for Extreme Makeover.

He married Pam Engle in 1987, and they had a son in 1992.

He was featured in the documentary "Running the Sahara," narrated by Matt Damon .
