ABOUT CHARLES ABNER POWELL

Baseball pioneer who invented the tradition of ladies' day, the baseball tarpaulin, and most importantly the rain check.

He was brought over to New Orleans on a salary of $175 a month to play and manage in one of the rainiest cities in the U.S.

He got the idea for the rain ticket in the middle of the night: he'd leave ticket-holders a stub they could use for re-admission if games got rained out.

He grew up in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.

Like him, Bill Veeck helped to make baseball the great American pastime.
