He was born in Miami, Florida.

His fighting nicknames included "Chainsaw" and "Captain Miserable."

He married Elisa McCarthy in 2005, and the couple became parents to two sons.

He lost the final fight of his career to fellow mixed martial artist, Michael Bisping , in 2008.
