Fashion designer recognized as America's first couturier.
In 1926, he opened his first hat shop, Charles Boucherdon, which he named after a school friend.
He designed the entire interior and select pieces of furniture for Dominique de Menil's home.
He was born and raised in Chicago.
He died alone at the Chelsea Hotel -- the same place actress Gaby Hoffmann lived for several years during her youth.
