He double majored in Foreign Affairs and Spanish at the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1995.

He was pleased to land a job writing for 10 Things I Hate About You, since he was a huge fan of the film.

He married his partner Patrick Sean Smith in Maui in 2008.

He loved the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, which starred Julia Stiles as Kat.
