He won the Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2008.
His mother is state champion track and field athelete Lynn Metcalf. He married Kristin Knipper.
He and diver David Boudia have both won the Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year Award.
