He started his journalism career as a TV news director.

One of his best-received stories was his coverage of Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr.'s assassination.

He married twice: first to Shirley and then to Shelly, both of whom are now deceased.

He used to anchor World News, which was later anchored by Diane Sawyer .
