Singer and scholar who published the book Country Music, U.S.A, which was the first definitive history of country music.
He studied at the University of Texas and went on to become a popular singer in the Austin area.
The Society for American Music awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
He grew up in Tyler, Texas.
He and screenwriter Kim Henkel both studied at the University of Texas.
