British comedian and writer known for contributing to many prominent performers including Richard Pryor and David Frost . He wrote for the British television comedy series, Doctor in the House. He authored multiple books about comedy throughout his long career.
He earned jobs performing comedy on stage after choosing to quit his studies.
He had to abandon most of his early ambitions as a performer because of his eczema and chose to focus mainly on writing because it was something he could do even when suffering from eczema attacks. In 2021, the British Music Hall Society awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award.
He lived with his wife Terry.
He wrote material for Bob Hope on multiple occasions.
