German actress and singer whose most popular works include Berlin Alexanderplatz, Lola, Marianne and Juliane, Europa, and Two of Us; among many others. Awards she has won include three Bavarian Film Awards, Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, and a Venice Film Festival Award. She has been nominated for other European Film Awards and Grammys.

She was born and raised in Bremen, Germany, and went on to study acting in Vienna at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. Her career began in 1971 with theater productions.

She speaks German, English, and French. She played Kathy Dassler in the 2023 sports drama Air .

She has three sons, one from her marriage to Hans-Michael Rehberg, one from her relationship with Daniel Olbrychski, and one with Robert Longo .

She has acted in many films by the director Margarethe von Trotta .
