She was a highly accomplished student and studied at the University of Adelaide , graduating in 1997 with arts and law degrees. Her first job was an internship at The Advertiser that same year.

In 2014, she wrote a book called The Wife Drought, covering the topic of work-life balance for women. She was also a regular panelist on the ABC Television political show Insiders.

She is from Adelaide, Australia. Her parents are Christobel and Mac. Her partner is named Jim Storer, and they have three children that they co-parent together.
