He began his journalism career as a trainee reporter at the Gloucestershire Echo shortly after completing his A-levels. He gained extensive experience in local journalism before moving to national newspapers. His career includes roles as assistant editor at both The Times and The Daily Telegraph, and as political editor at The Times. In 2009, he joined the Daily Mail as a columnist and consultant editor.

Born in Bristol to an Irish Roman Catholic mother and an unknown father. He spent his early years in Nazareth House, a Catholic orphanage in Cheltenham, before being adopted by a family from Swindon. Raised on a council estate, his adoptive father worked on the assembly line at British Leyland.
