MLB first baseman who slugged 253 home runs and was selected to two All-Star teams during his 15-year career.
He was signed to his first professional baseball contract just a week before he was eligible to vote.
He won the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in 1979 for his charitable work.
After his first wife and his daughter were killed in a car accident, he married Gail Thornton, with whom he had two more sons.
He became a member of the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame along with legendary pitcher Bob Feller .
