ABOUT ALEXANDER BOGHOSSIAN

Armenian-Ethiopian painter and art teacher who became the first contemporary African artist whose work was acquired by the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris.

He was awarded second prize at Haile Selassie I's Jubilee Anniversary Celebration in 1954. This honor allowed him to secure a scholarship to continue his studies in Europe.

He designed a 1977 United Nations stamp, becoming the first African artist to create a First Day Cover.

He fathered two children: Aida Mariam and Edward Addisu.

He and Augustus John both studied at the Slade School of Fine Art.
