ABOUT ALDA LARA

Angolan poet known for Tempo da Chuva and other Portuguese-language poetry collections. The prestigious Alda Lara literary prize bears her name.

She studied at Lisbon University and at the University of Coimbra.

Her poem "Preludio/Mae Negra" was set to music and recorded by Portuguese singer Paulo de Carvalho.

Her husband, Orlando Albuquerque, published her collected works shortly after her death.

She was a contemporary of fellow Angolan poet Viriato Dacruz ; however, Dacruz fought for Angolan independence from Portugal, while Lara embraced Portuguese language and culture in her writing.
