He grew up idolizing the organist Jimmy McGriff and, inspired by him, took up the keyboard.
Nicknamed The Iceman, he recorded a number of popular albums and toured Europe, Canada, and Japan.
His family moved from Leona, Texas to Houston when he was seven.
He performed at Live Aid '95 alongside George Thorogood and the Destroyers.
