ABOUT ALAN COTTRELL
English physicist who is considered a pioneer in the area of solid state physics. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Copley Medal, the Royal Society's most distinguished honor.
He earned his PhD from the University of Birmingham.
He was made a member of the Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955 and was knighted in 1971.
He was married to Jean Elizabeth Harber from 1994 until her death in 1999. They had one son together.
He and Ross J Anderson have both served as professors at the University of Cambridge.
