Lyricist known for writing How Do You Keep the Music Playing?, It Might Be You, Up Where We Belong, and other popular songs. His music has been used in more than 700 episodes of television throughout his long career.
He studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UCLA.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980. Two original songs were featured in the 1982 classic Tootsie .
He married Marilyn Bergman in 1958.
He co-wrote the theme song for the 1970s sitcom Maude, which starred Bea Arthur .
