He worked for the Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, and Florida Today before founding USA Today.

He adopted eight children with his third wife Rachel Fornes and had two children from his first marriage with Loretta Helgeland.

He founded the Al Neuharth Excellence in Media Award, which was given to Helen Thomas in 1991.
