ABOUT AL BELL
The co-owner of Stax Records and one-time President of Motown Records, this acclaimed music producer also started a music label called Bellmark.
Early in his music career, he worked as a disc jockey in his native Arkansas, playing a major role in the rise to fame of such soul singers and groups as Isaac Hayes , The Dramatics, and The Staples Singers.
His independent music label, Bellmark, produced the 1993 hit single "Whoomp! (There It Is)."
He was born in Brinkley, Arkansas, and he later settled in Little Rock.
He and Berry Gordy, Jr. were both involved in the transfer of Motown Records' ownership to the Boston Ventures Group and the Music Corporation of America (MCA).
