She attended Minnesota State University where she obtained a degree in sociology.
She was an avid supporter of Habitat for Humanity.
She has two children, Jakob and Joseph , with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong , whom she married in 1994.
She was the sister of professional skateboarder Steve Nesser .
