He was born in Ontario and moved during his childhood to New York City.
He served as the New York Times' Foreign Correspondent from 1954 to 1967.
He was one of six children born to a Canadian family of Jewish heritage.
He and Frances Fitzgerald were both Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists.
